At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
